Melissa McCarthy Says Sorry After Donating Money To Anti-Abortion Charity
Melissa McCarthy had to come out and apologize after it was revealed she had accidentally supported an anti-abortion and anti-LGBTQ organization. McCarthy and HBO Max recently began their "20 Days of Kindness" program, which came out just before their new film, Supervillain.
In a video posted on her Instagram this Thursday, McCarthy explained how it had come to their attention that they had donated to an organization they shouldn't have. She said there was "no other way to say it, we blew it."
Melissa went on to say she and her team supported a charity with values unlike their own. Reportedly, Exodus Cry is an organization with the stated mission of putting an end to human trafficking all over the world.
However, the Daily Beast says the non-profit's creator, Benjamin Nolot has a history of putting the LGBTQ community on blast. For instance, the outlet claims he once said abortion was like the "holocaust," and described gay relationships as an "unspeakable offense to God."
McCarthy thanked her fans in the post for calling out the charity. The actress says she was grateful for her fans because neither she nor HBO Max wants to support such a group. The Bridesmaid s star explained how they have since pulled their money out of the group.
The network, HBO Max, also released a statement to The Wrap in which they claimed they had been "made aware" of the problems surrounding Exodus Cry.
They have since removed them from their list of charities. Regarding which charities they will support, Page Six says HBO Max has worked with Planned Parenthood, Best Friends Animal Society, and Habitat for Humanity.
The last time Melissa McCarthy was in the headlines was when she and her cast and crewmates were promoting the film, The Kitchen, which wound up being a box office and critical failure.
Additionally, rumor has it that Melissa will be the star of the upcoming Mermaid live-action remake. It was reported by multiple outlets that Melissa will be cast as Ursula, although, social media users were allegedly upset by the fact Lizzo wasn't cast instead.
