On the 31st of August, Friday, Mel and her ex-husband, Stephen Belafonte, fought in a court of law in Los Angeles after he accused her of having problems with alcohol and drugs.
Taline Boyamiam, the Spice Girls lawyer, explained that her client is willing to submit to three months of drug testing as well as a full psychiatric evaluation. Taline asked for Belafonte to commit to random drug testing as well, but the judge shut down the request, stating that the attorney didn’t have any proof it was necessary.
Officially, as per lawyer, Mel B denied all allegations of substance abuse. Previously, Mel explained she was going to rehab, not for substance problems, but PTSD due to her supposed abusive relationship.
As fans of the Spice Girls alum know, she and the producer, both 43-years-of-age, got married in 2007 which lasted until 2017. They separated last year following a long and vicious battle that was intensely publicized by the media.
Mel has a 6-year-old daughter with Stephen – Madison – and is also the mother of her daughters, Phoenix, 19, and Angel, 11, with Jimmy Gulzar and her ex, Eddie Murphy.
Stephen’s lawyer, Grace Jamra, said: “we are here for Madison.” When the reality star arrived in court, she was wearing a red jumpsuit and a leopard-print coat.
The couple has to appear before the court again on the 4th of September, Tuesday, and Mel joked that she would “have a lot more makeup on,” because she’s filming an episode of America’s Got Talent that day.
As it was previously reported, Mel B revealed she would be undergoing treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder, citing the “emotional abuse” she endured during her marriage to Stephen Belafonte. The death of her father played a critical role in this as well.
Moreover, her longtime caregiver and friend, Rusty Updegraff, claimed in a court declaration that he quit his job because of Mel’s increasingly “erratic” behavior. He also claimed she has a serious drinking problem as well as a cocaine problem.
