Megyn Kelly is back in the hot seat. The former Fox News anchor stirred up some heavy drama after commenting about how blackface is not necessarily racist on Halloween. Backlash was swift, and there is even talk that NBC is finally ready to throw in the towel. The shocking comments come amid low ratings for Kelly, who has struggled to find her way on NBC’s Today, despite her annual $23 million salary.
Kelly’s latest scandal happened during a panel discussion with Jenna Bush Hager and Jacob Soboroff. The conversation turned to the time when Real Housewives of New York star Luann de Lesseps put on blackface for a Diana Ross costume on Halloween, a move Kelly did not think was racist.

“I don’t see how that is racist on Halloween,” Kelly shared on the show. “That was okay when I was a kid, as long as you were dressing like a character.”
According to Radar Online, both of Kelly’s guests did not agree with her stance on blackface, but they were unable to change her mind on the subject. Fans on Twitter, however, were quick to bash Kelly for the racist comments and slammed her for advocating those views on national TV.
Even television host Padma Lakshmi blasted Kelly for not being educated about social issues, especially with her being in such a position of power.
Following the overwhelmingly negative response on social media, Kelly issued a formal apology to fans and her NBC co-stars. The Today host explained how she changed her opinion on blackface after listening to colleagues and friends. She then apologized for making the comments and reiterated how blackface is not appropriate for Halloween.

Kelly closed by saying how she plans on being more “pc” about race and ethnicity topics and looks forward to talking about serious issues in the future.
It is unclear how the comments will affect Megyn Kelly’s part on Today. Inside sources previously revealed that Kelly was in hot water with producers after acting like a diva on set. While her apology will probably help smooth things over, the blackface comments did not help her approval rating with fans.
