Prince Harry and his fiancé Meghan Markle revealed their official engagement portraits this week, and the pictures are nothing like any of the royal engagement photos from the past. The stunning, modern pics feature affection, PDA, and Markle wearing a non-traditional sheer black and gold dress. Did the Queen approve of the whopping $75,000 price tag for the couture gown?
Closer Weekly is reporting that the embellished gown is a design from British high-fashion house Ralph & Russo and was part of their Fall couture collection. Some fans couldn’t get enough of the amazing dress, while others found the price to be obscene and the sheer sleeves too revealing for royal wear.
The gown is nothing like what Kate Middleton wore in her 2010 engagement photos with Prince William. She wore a demure, white knee-length dress from Reiss and looked perfectly proper next to the future King of England. In a more candid pic, the couple pose with their faces close together, while William puts his arms around Kate.

But, Harry and Markle look happy and more in love in their pictures, deciding to sidestep formality and instead opting for romance and intimacy. Their pics are also the first to be in black and white since the introduction of color photography.
According to People magazine, fashion photographer Alexi Lubomirski took the pics at Frogmore House in Windsor.
In the first photo, the couple sits on a set of stairs while Markle leans in on Harry’s leg, wearing the expensive gown, while he wears a blue suit. Of course, the actress is showing off her engagement ring for the camera.
In the second pic, the couple is nuzzled together and laughing as Markle touches Harry’s face, again showing off her stunning ring and wearing a Victoria Beckham sweater while Harry wears a Burberry coat. Finally, in the candid third shot, the couple walks hand-in-hand, again in their suit and gown.
Kensington Palace said in a statement, “As a way to say thank you, they have decided to share this candid photograph from the day of their portrait sittings directly with all of you. The couple are so grateful for the warm and generous messages they have received during such a happy time in their lives.”
Thank you so much for all of the wonderful comments following the release of Prince Harry and Ms. Meghan Markle's engagement photographs. The couple are so grateful for the warm and generous messages they have received during such a happy time in their lives. As a way to say thank you, they have decided to share this candid photograph from the day of their portrait sittings directly with all of you.
Per The Daily Mail, other royal couples throughout the years have released a formal photo, along with a more casual shot. But in many, there are no smiles or even touching. In a 1947 photo, then-Princess Elizabeth stands next to Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten in a very stiff pose with no body contact.
In 1981, in a surprisingly affectionate pose, Prince Charles and Diana Spencer posed in casual clothes while showing off the ring that someday would belong to Kate.
But, the 1986 photo of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson was the most typically royal of all. Featuring the high hair and embellishments of the decade, Andrew wears a ceremonial day dress uniform of a naval lieutenant, while Ferguson wore an outlandish three-tiered evening dress in black, white, and royal blue. The couple is not touching, and they barely crack smiles in the photo taken at Buckingham Palace.
Meghan Markle will wed Prince Harry May 19, 2018, at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle.
