Meghan Markle’s father recently opened up about his encounter with Prince Harry before last month’s royal wedding. Thomas Markle appeared on Good Morning Britain this week and revealed that he talked with Harry about a number of different subjects before the ceremony, including Brexit and U.S. President Donald Trump.
Thomas says that he had quite the conversation with Harry before he tied the knot with Meghan. The 73-year-old – who was not present for the wedding – claims that Harry told him to give Trump a chance before rejecting him.
Members of the royal family are supposed to remain neutral when it comes to politics, but it sounds like Harry has some pretty strong opinions.
“I was complaining that I didn’t like Donald Trump, he said give Donald Trump a chance. I sort of disagreed with that…That was his politics, I have my politics,” Thomas explained in the interview.

According to Daily Mail, Thomas revealed that he had several conversations with Harry, most of which revolved around politics. Although Harry told Thomas to give Trump a chance, he believes that Harry has probably changed his opinion since then. Thomas admitted that he is not a fan of Trump and that he hopes Harry feels differently about him now that he’s been in office for a few years.
Apart from politics, Thomas and Harry also talked about how he met Meghan. Thomas is happy about their relationship and believes Harry is a smart guy. He has not, however, met Harry in person.
Thomas was supposed to walk Meghan down the aisle when she exchange vows with Harry on May 19. He cancelled those plans the week of the wedding because of health issues. Looking back, Thomas regrets not being able to make it to the wedding and give his daughter away.
He even revealed that Meghan cried on the phone when he told her he couldn’t make. When he watched Meghan tie the knot with Harry, he says he also couldn’t hold back the tears.
Kensington Palace has not commented on Thomas’ interview and the things he said about Harry’s political views. Members of the royal family usually steer clear of politics and his views could cause some problems in that arena.
The comments come two years after Queen Elizabeth found herself in hot water about Brexit. Her Majesty reportedly talked about the issue with political leader Nick Clegg right before the vote.
Meghan Markle or Prince harry have not commented on her father’s recent interview.
