The actor is taking on a very dark role and judging by the trailer, he is doing a great job creeping everyone out! Matt Smith, best known for his roles on Doctor Who and The Crown is totally unrecognizable portraying real-life cult leader Charles Manson in the upcoming film appropriately titled ‘Charlie Says.’
The movie, which is directed by American Psycho’s Mary Herron, is set to show how Manson convinced so many people to hang off his every word and follow his every action to the point that they willingly became murderers.
As for the trailer, it starts with Mary Brunner, played by Suki Waterhouse, Leslie Van Houten, played by Hannah Murray, and Patricia Krenwinkel, played by Sosie Bacon, serving time behind bars together.
The film appears to be focusing on the Tate-LaBianca murders of 1969 as well, and also stars Merritt Wever and Chace Crawford.
As you may know, the real-life Charles Manson died in prison back in 2017 at the age of 83.
Meanwhile, Krenwinkel and Van Houten, who also played a big role in the infamous murders, are still serving their sentences in prison.
Brunner, also known to be the original Manson girl since they started their relationship back in 1965, was released on parole in 1977.
Meanwhile, Susan Atkins died in prison in 2009. In Charlie Says, she is portrayed by Marianne Rendón.
The movie that is set to be released in theaters near you on May 10 is not the only project inspired by Charles Manson this year!
In fact, even earlier, on April 5, The Haunting of Sharon Tate is coming out.
The movie stars Hilary Duff in the role of Sharon Tate, Roman Polanski’s pregnant wife slain by Manson’s followers.
Furthermore, on July 26, Quentin Tarantino’s own movie about Manson, titled Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, will also be released.
In his version, Tate is played by Margot Robbie, while the film also features other big names such as Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio.
