Matt Lauer Reportedly Planning His Return To TV One Year After Being Fired For Sexual Misconduct
Matt Lauer is trying to mount a comeback. The disgraced Today host is reportedly thinking about returning to television in a big way — which might be difficult given the whole sexual harassment scandal that got him fired in the first place.
NBC fired Lauer in late 2017 after multiple women accused him of sexually harassing them. Despite the scandal and public outcry, insiders claim Lauer wants to return with a talk show of his own.
According to Closer Weekly , sources say that Lauer is trying to ink a deal with HBO to launch his own talk show, and he is using longtime buddy Bryan Gumbel to help him out.
"He wants to host an investigative talk show, and he’s hoping HBO will give him a shot," the insider explained.
The source added that Gumbel knows getting his friend a job is a long shot. But Lauer is apparently willing to do whatever it takes to get back on TV, even if that means begging the studio to give him a chance.
It is hard to believe that HBO will give Lauer a shot — let alone his own show — after everything he did. That does not mean Lauer will never appear on television again, but it seems a little too soon for him to make a comeback.
The only thing that is certain is that Lauer will not be returning to NBC anytime soon. The disgraced anchor was noticeably missing on last week's episode of Today , which aired the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Lauer has hosted the event multiple times over the years, and fans were quick to pick up on his absence. Fortunately, Al Roker, Hoda Kotb, and Savannah Guthrie did a fine job hosting the festivities.
In fact, many fans slammed Lauer on social media during the parade, making it clear that few people want to see him back on television anytime soon.
Matt Lauer has not commented on the rumors surrounding his attempted comeback.
