The popular series The Handmaid’s Tale’s second season is only a couple of weeks away, and people are super excited to watch it. But it is safe to say that the TV show is more than just entertainment.

The author of the dystopian drama, Margaret Atwood, opened up about how its huge success has inspired many women to fight more for their rights as well as how real it seems with Donald Trump as the president.

About her book turned Emmy-winning series, Atwood stated: ‘It has become an international protest method. People dress up as Handmaids, and they’re just there. They are there in legislatures; they are there outside legislatures, where people are making repressive laws and trying to move the clock back, and they cannot be thrown out because they are not making a ruckus. They are quite silent and modest, but everyone can look at them and see what they mean, and that’s gone around the world.’

The novelist also opened up about how proud but also concerned she is that the story she wrote back in 1985 still resonates with today’s audiences.

In fact, it may seem more real and relatable amid Donald Trump’s presidency than it has been for a long time.

Margaret confessed that the upcoming second season has drawn a lot of inspiration from the real-life current state of society.

When asked if she believes the show would’ve been as successful if Trump didn’t win the election, Atwood replied: ‘It would be a very different show. It would still be a good show, but it would not be so creepily prescient, as it is now. And, as we go into season two, because they’ve situated it in the present time, rather than in 1985, they are able to write in elements of our reality we are living, so it gets even closer to what we like to think of as real life.’
