Lil Nas X Gets Candid About Coming Out — Reveals He No Longer Speaks To His Mother
Lil Nas X made history last year when his song that blew up on Tik Tok became a genre-defying number one hit. The artist also decided to reveal that he was gay to much applause.
Nas recently took a look back to his whirlwind of a year that made him go from sleeping on his sister’s couch to having the number one song in the country. Since then, he’s collaborated with artists such as Da Baby and the original Nas.
He recently sat down with The Guardian where he discussed his decision to reveal his sexuality.
It turns out if he didn’t become an overnight superstar — he probably wouldn’t have told anyone at all.
‘The honest truth is, I planned to die with the secret. But that changed when I became Lil Nas X.’
He went on to say how important it is to encourage his fans to live true to themselves as long as they feel safe doing so,
‘I 100 percent want to represent the LGBT community. I don’t want to encourage them to do something they don’t 100 percent want to do. Especially in, like, middle school or high school. Because it’s just super-hard. It’s easier for me. I’m not depending on anybody. There’s no one who’s going to kick me out of the house—nobody to start treating me s****.’
He revealed how coming out changed the dynamic within his circle. He told his parents but only went on to say that he no longer speaks to his mother.
‘My family knows now. But it’s not something that’s ever brought up or we speak about. We’re quiet on it. Nobody’s like, ‘Oh, you got a boyfriend?’ I don’t want [my love life] to be something we never talk about. Because what about the kids in my family? I would like it to be a healthy medium between, ‘Who are you f******?’ and just not saying anything.’
It’s great to see a young queer artist thriving while trying to set an example for those just like him.
