Katy Perry recently surprised not only Tom Marrero, an Orlando shooting survivor, but she also surprised the audience of Ellen show. Tom Marrero has taken his friend, Luis Vielma, on the fatidic night of June 12, and went out to Pulse Nightclub in Orlando. Tragically, a man took out a gun and opened fire, killing 49 people on the spot. His friend, who worked at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, also died on that night.
Miraculously, Marrero was one of the survivors, even though he received a couple of gunshots in the back. Ellen DeGeneres invited him as a guest in her show, after he posted some photos with a sign saying “I’m Still Swimming, Ellen” as a reference to the movie DeGeneres participated in, Finding Dory.

Though this gesture in itself was quite a moving one, prepare your tissues because you’ll get even more emotional. DeGeneres also prepared some surprises for Marrero. He had previously explained that Katy Perry’s song, Rise, helped him during the recovery because the lyrics are powerful and the song is beautiful.
Ellen asked Marrero if he had ever met Katy Perry, to which he replied that he didn’t, and then she called Katy Perry right on the stage, to Marrero’s huge surprise! The singer appeared on the stage already with tears in her eyes, since she had been listening to his story from backstage. They hugged for a long time in front of the cameras, and then the survivor told Katy how much her song helped him when he was in the hospital.
Perry was almost speechless, while DeGeneres underlined once again how important it is to spread love and understanding and keep your hopes up for a better world. All in all, it was perhaps one of the most touching shows Ellen made, especially since Perry also decided to pay the costs for the first year of film school for Marrero.
