Julianne Moore is one of the most iconic and respected actors in the industry and even has five Oscar nominations under her belt. However, as it turns out, that is not to say she always receives equal pay with some of her co-stars.

While chatting with the Telegraph in a new interview, the star, who has been in Hollywood for over three decades was asked about her earnings and if they are equal.

‘Oh, no! Definitely not,’ she responded.

However, the way she explained it, it seems like it’s not totally about gender but rather ‘hierarchical.’

‘So if there's people who have bigger roles and are bigger stars, they will be paid more. But I think the question everybody is asking is, well, even if it's hierarchical, and you have actors of equal stature and who have equal parts, then they should be paid the same. But obviously it is very challenging,’ Moore explained.

The question was meant to touch upon a problem that has been in the spotlight in recent years, however.

Lately, a number of actresses have decided to speak out about pay inequality in the film industry.

One of those voices is Jennifer Lawrence, who released a Lenny Letter essay back in 2015, that poses the question: ‘Why Do I Make Less Than My Male Co-Stars?’

Emma Stone is another and back in 2017, she revealed that her male co-stars have voluntarily taken pay cuts for her so that they could match their earnings.

During an interview with Out, she explained that it is ‘something they do for me because they feel it's what's right and fair. That's something that is also not discussed, —that our getting equal pay's going to require people to selflessly say, 'That is what is fair.' If my male co star, who has a higher quote than me but who believes we're equal, takes a pay cut so I can match him, that also changes my quote in the future and changes my life.’
