In 2013, when Marvel Studios announced their partnership with Netflix to create a series of interconnected television shows, there were only four shows planned: Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. However, after the popularity of Jon Bernthal’s character, The Punisher, in Daredevil’s second season, a new spin-off series was quickly green-lit. Now, the streaming giant has released the first trailer with Bernthal in action.
Fans who are familiar with the origins of The Punisher will find a lot of familiar territory being explored in the trailer, although it is an original take on the story.
No matter which version of the origin you follow, the basic premise is the same: police officer Frank Castle becomes a deadly vigilante after his family is murdered by bad guys.
The Netflix version will alter the tale slightly, with Castle portrayed as a former soldier who took part in a corrupt CIA operation.
It’s his involvement in that covert action that prompts the murder of his family and forces him into hiding from not only the CIA but the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security as well.
Daredevil co-star Deborah Ann Woll will reprise her role as Karen Page on The Punisher, as the newly-minted reporter tries to assist Castle in his quest for vengeance.
As you can see from the trailer, the new series looks to be particularly violent and bloody, even in comparison to the other Marvel Netflix shows.
“It’s going to get into as dark and as brutal a place as you’ve ever seen in the Marvel world, I can promise you that,” said Bernthal in a recent interview.
Interestingly, Netflix is still playing coy on the release date for The Punisher. The trailer ends with the traditional release date reveal, except everything but the year “2017” is obscured. We’re getting close to the monthly list of new Netflix releases for October, though, so don’t be surprised to find The Punisher among those slated to premiere.
