Actor John O’Hurley returns to the National Dog Show on Thanksgiving Day. Best known for his work on Seinfeld, O’Hurley joins David Frei for the 17th annual show. A Thanksgiving tradition, the show is pre-taped and is a staple airing every year following the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
The show will air between noon and 2 pm in all time zones. O’Hurley has a number of projects in the works but he is remembered most for his role of J. Peterman on Seinfeld. O’Huley has also hosted Dancing With The Stars.
The National Dog Show is revered for its family appeal. The annual special not only focuses on different dog breeds but provides wholesome entertainment for the entire family on Thanksgiving.
John O’Hurley won’t be the only celebrity featured in the special. Olympic medalists and ice skaters Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski will provide digital coverage.
John O’Hurley released a statement about hosting the show.
“For 17 years, the National Dog Show Presented by Purina® has been at the forefront of the purebred dog world. I’m proud to be a part of a legacy that not only celebrates such a rich history of dog breeds but also being part of a tradition that entertains everyone from 4 to 94.”

NBC released a statement about the upcoming special and the celebrity hosts.
“The National Dog Show will be hosted by award-winning TV personality, author and Broadway star John O’Hurley (Seinfeld, Dancing with the Stars). Returning to offer expert analysis is American Kennel Club-licensed judge David Frei, who has officiated at dog shows worldwide and, alongside O’Hurley, has co-hosted the competition since its inception in 2002. NBC Sports correspondent Mary Carillo will report from inside the show ring, and former U.S. Olympic figure skaters Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir will offer behind-the-scenes access as digital contributors.”
This year, the National Dog Show and Purina have partnered for a social media promotion. Social media users are invited to write messages that explain why they are thankful or grateful for their pets. Users are invited to hashtag #DogThanking and include the @Purina account. Messages may be sent on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.
For every message that uses the hashtag and account symbol, Purina will donate one dollar to the Tony LaRussa’s Animal Rescue Foundation Pets and Vets program.
The program offers assistance for veterans who need a service or therapy dog as they deal with the impact of Post-Traumatic-Stress-Disorder (PTSD) in their lives.
The National Dog Show is usually a rating success. The 2017 Thanksgiving special drew 22 million viewers.
