John Legend Addresses The Backlash Over Working With Harvey Weinstein And ‘Denouncing’ R. Kelly
John Legend has worked with the disgraced movie maker before, and it looks like some fans were upset he hadn’t ‘denounced’ Harvey Weinstein yet! Now, the singer is addressing the controversy – here’s what he had to say!
As you may know, Legend was also part of Surviving R. Kelly, a docuseries about the star’s alleged crimes against multiple women.
He’s also revealed in other interviews that he’d seen Kelly act inappropriately with his at the time, underage protégé Aaliyah.
So while John Legend admitted in the docuseries that Kelly is a talented person, he made sure to also denounce him for his disgraceful actions, saying: ‘R. Kelly’s brought a lot of pain to so many people. Time’s up for R. Kelly.’
But the problem was that after this statement, some thought he was pretty hypocritical for not denouncing Harvey Weinstein as well, since they worked together before.
One fan took to Twitter yesterday to share a pic of Legend and his wife, Chrissy Teigen posing with Harvey Weinstein back in 2016 at the Sundance Film Festival and demanded: ‘johnlegend, please explain?? I don’t remember you publicly denouncing this man!!! @cthagod.’
In response, Legend wrote: ‘I took a photo with him and worked with Weinstein on several occasions before his abuse became known to me and the world. Since being exposed, his company and career have been destroyed, and he has been indicted – something that should happen to R Kelly.’
As for his stance against R. Kelly, Legend previously stated that he was not brave at all for appearing in the series as so many people said online.
He explained: ‘I believe these women and don’t give a f**k about protecting a serial child rapist. Easy decision.’
Soon after, his wife, Chrissy commented on how proud she was of him.
