During a ‘question and answer’ session for InStyle.com, Jennifer Lopez opened up about her body. The superstar revealed that while now her curves are admired and praised when she first entered the industry, she was criticized for the way she looked.
While Lopez made it very clear that growing up, she was always confident about her body, Hollywood didn’t really accept her the way she was.
‘I got a lot of flak from people in the industry. They would say, ‘You should lose a few pounds,’ or ‘You should do this or that.’ It finally got to the point where I was like, ‘This is who I am. I am shaped like this.’ Everyone I grew up with looked like that, and they were all beautiful to me. I did not see anything wrong with it. I still don’t!’ Jennifer explained.
Fortunately, nowadays people, famous and not, thank the singer and actress for being an example that more than just one body type looks beautiful.
She also admitted that she works hard to stay in shape.
‘So many people have come up to me over the years – famous people, people I meet on the street, fans, everybody – and they say the very thing: ‘Thank you so much. I have the same type of body. I used to think I was fat, but now I feel beautiful. My generation was focused on size 0 models. It was so unattainable for most normal people, including me. My mom and my grandmother were the ones who drilled into me, ‘This is how we are, and this is what is beautiful.’’
She went on: ‘My dad loved my mom’s body – all the men in our family loved the women’s bodies. Being curvy or not being six-feet tall was never a bad thing; it was something that was celebrated. And so, later on, when I brought that in front of the world, I was not really trying to send a message. I was just being myself.’
Lopez is now trying her best to help her ten-year-old daughter Emme be just as confident in her own skin.
