Jada Pinkett Smith admitted that she was not a perfect parent while raising Willow and Jaden Smith, revealing that she made the mistake of being unfair to her daughter when she was young. More precisely, the actress confessed that’s she was ‘harder’ on Willow than on Jaden and explained why, as well!
As it turns out, Jada Pinkett Smith wanted to make her daughter ‘strong,’ which is why she was always harder on her than on her brother while raising them.
But looking back, she realizes she might have been wrong to do that but is willing to learn!
During the latest episode of Red Table Talk, Willow did not hold anything back when she decided to call her mom out for using very different standards for her and Jaden.
Apparently, Jada would always pressure Willow to get ready for school quickly while Jaden’s early life was rather relaxed.
‘I’d be ready at the door … and he’s getting his shoes on. There is a difference between how Black moms will treat their daughters and their sons,’ Willow mentioned on the show, prompting her mother to agree.
‘She might have a point because I would be like, ‘No, you’ve got to be on it.’ [But to Jaden] ‘You, nah’… And then I be like, ‘And his father will deal with that. But you, you’re mine.’’
The actress went on to explain that this double standard that she employed had a lot to do with her own experience as a Black woman.
She explained: ‘Because I know in this world, we have to work harder. I knew that she’s going to have it twice as hard. I needed you to be strong, because I know what this world is like for us as Black women.’
Willow agreed and joked that the tough love might have been worth it since now she always gets to work on time.
