Issa Rae is not afraid to make her dislike of Kanye West – or at least of his beliefs – known! The star of Insecure was the host of the CFDA Fashion Awards on Monday, and during her opening speech, she made fun of the rapper despite the fact that his wife Kim Kardashian was also in attendance.
As you may be aware, the KUWK star received the fashion council’s Influencer Award (the first-ever of its kind.)

USA Today reported that Rae said: ‘I’m about as fashionable as Kanye’s black. Only when it is convenient. That joke was my choice, just like slavery.’
The celeb referenced Kanye’s controversial comments about slavery during an interview with TMZ.
West suggested that African-Americans ‘chose’ to be slaves.
‘You hear about slavery for 400 years. For 400 years?! That sounds like a choice. You were there for 400 years, and it was all of y’all? It’s like we are meant to be in prison. I like the word ‘prison’ because slavery goes too direct to the idea of blacks… prison’s something that unites us as one race.’
Later on, Kanye took to Twitter to clarify his statement.
‘To make myself clear. Of course I know slaves didn’t get shackled and put on a boat on free will. My point is that for us to have stayed in that position even if the numbers were on our side means we were mentally enslaved. The reason I brought up the 400 years point is that we cannot be mentally imprisoned for another 400 years.’
‘We need free-thought now. Even my statement was an example of free thought. It was an idea. Once again I’m being attacked for presenting new ideas.’
Issa made yet another bold statement, this time on the red carpet and through her fashion by wearing a belt that read: ‘Every N**** Is a Star’ – Boris Gardiner lyrics and part of the soundtrack of the critically acclaimed, Oscar-winning film Moonlight.
