It looks like actress, writer, and comedian Issa Rae is one hell of a party thrower. The epic party was all documented on Instagram stories and the internet lost its collective minds at guestlist.
This weekend, the star of HBO’s runaway hit Insecure threw an impromptu kickback for black creatives in the Atlanta area, complete with bubbly and lemon pepper chicken wings. Some familiar faces showed up, such as costars Yvonne Orji and Lil Rel.
Other notable faces were singer and actress Janelle Monae, acting legend Samual L Jackson, up and coming Amandla Stenberg, and fellow actor and creator Donald Glover.
Rapper Mack Wilds was also in attendance, as was singer Luke James, actress Tessa Thompson, and singer Jidenda.
There’s nothing quite like having a fun celebratory time with like-minded individuals as a way to recognize one another and celebrate personal successes. Many of the individuals in the room have done tremendous work in the arts and in their communities.
Acting powerhouse Samuel L Jackson happened to be in town and stopped by. He even taught Issa how to eat chicken wings the correct way. Impressive indeed.
It’s also nice to see the sight of younger, just breaking in artists coming together and supporting one another in creative and important processes. Supportive communities are always crucial and that doesn’t change when an individual gets a little bit of stardom.
Along with the impressive accolades of Samuel L Jackson, many of the other guests have enjoyed relatively substantial amounts of fame in recent years. Janelle Monae is coming off the stellar and surprising success of critically acclaimed films “Hidden Figures” and “Moonlight.”
Donald Glover and Brian Tyree Henry have been praised extensively for comedy breakout hit Atlanta, as well as racked up Emmy wins for the show.
Amandla Stenberg is carving out an impressive film career as a young actress who continues to book consistently good roles. Tessa Thompson has recently joined the superhero family Marvel in the newest Thor adaptation.
All in all, these party goers truly do have so much to celebrate. Here’s hoping that their success is mighty and even more bountiful.
