Mayans MC owes a lot more to Sons of Anarchy than fans might think. The spin-off features a new setting and a cast full of new characters, but the events at the end of SOA heavily influenced everything we have seen so far on Mayans MC. – including Jax Teller’s (Charlie Hunnam) death.
In Season 4 of Sons of Anarchy, SAMCRO got involved distributing drugs and guns for the Galindo cartel. Clay Morrow (Ron Perlman) initiated the move for monetary gain, but Jax never wanted to deal drugs or work with the cartel.

Right before he died in the Season 7 finale, Jax gifted the cartel deal to Marcus Alvarez (Emilio Rivera) and the Mayans. The move set up one of the big story lines on Mayans MC as the club struggles with their relationship with the cartel on the border.
Mayans MC follows the story of JD Pardo’s EZ Reyes, a prospect in a Mayans charter on the border of California and Mexico.
Although the story picks up three years after the events in SOA, Alvarez is still the leader of the Mayans. But he is having trouble navigating his relationship with the cartel, which is now headed up by Miguel Galindo (Danny Pino).
Apart from inheriting the cartel, the premiere of Mayans MC made it clear that the relationship between SAMCRO and the Mayans has changed. The two clubs fought wars against each other and were at odds for the majority of the original show.

In the spin-off, however, SAMCRO and the Mayans work together to solve an issue with a rival gang on the border. This friendly relationship opens the door for future SOA cameos, which creator Kurt Sutter previously teased.
Fans can watch new episodes of Mayans MC Tues. nights on FX. The whole seven-year run of Sons of Anarchy, meanwhile, is on Netflix and FX+.
