Hoda Kotb stopped by Ellen DeGeneres’ show for today’s episode, and she opened up about taking over Matt Lauer’s seat at Today following his disgraceful firing. Fans may remember that, at first, she stepped in temporarily, but seeing how she did a great job and the audience really liked her, she got the gig fulltime!
‘After everything went down, [Lauer’s sexual misconduct scandal] they asked me to fill in for the rest of the week, and I said, ‘sure.’ And the next week they said, ‘we are sorting things out. Can you fill in the next week too?’ And then the third week came…it was never really: ‘we want to offer you something. They said, ‘we think this is working. Do you think this is working? Do you think it’s something you would want to try?’ It was, I think, very organic and real,’ Hoda revealed.
Just like Ellen also pointed out, hiring Hoda was a great decision as ratings have been strong ever since she took over’s Lauer’s job.
Per week, no less than four million viewers tune in to watch her and Savannah Guthrie co-anchor the morning segment.
In a previous sit-down with Jimmy Fallon however, Hoda admitted that Matt Lauer’s scandal was a really ‘difficult time’ for the network.
‘It was hard. Everybody saw it. We all went through it. But as you say, something lovely because of it happened and that is what we are focused on,’ she said at the time.
Of course she sees it like that! After all, not only is she now doing the job she’s always wanted but she has single-handedly saved the show following the huge scandal.
