According to a report obtained by Us Weekly, the Manhattan District Attorney, Cyrus R. Vance, has indicted Harvey Weinstein on charges of rape in the first and third degree as well as a criminal sex act in the first degree. The prosecutor claimed the charges against Harvey bring him a step closer to accountability for his crimes.
Cyrus said in court he is confident the court and jury would reject Ben Brafman’s claims that Harvey is innocent. On the 25th of May, Harvey turned himself into the possession of authorities at the New York Police Department precinct.
Following his arraignment, Weinstein pleaded “not guilty” to both charges of rape and sexual assault. Reportedly, the two incidents come from 2013 and 2004 respectively.
The disgraced producer coerced one of his employees to give him oral sex, and he allegedly raped another woman. Regarding his bail conditions, in addition to paying a $1 million and $10 million bond, Harvey has to wear an electronic bracelet on his ankle so he can’t leave the country.
The producer also had to turn over his passport. In a press release obtained by the Hollywood Reporter on Friday, Ben Brafman said his client has always maintained that all of his interactions were consensual and intends to plead not guilty. Harvey is confident the court will exonerate him.
My statement about this momentous day. Look for my upcoming OpEd in @time. “That Harvey Weinstein, a powerful man who thrived and flourished as he shattered and abused women in a culture of impunity was arrested and charged is resoundingly significant. It is a watershed event, an irreversible pivot away from tacit and explicit license to exploit to a ground of firmer boundaries and clarity about unacceptable behavior no longer being tolerated. These images of Harvey in handcuffs are possible because of the voices, backbone, determination demonstrated by survivors, and the journalists who reported our stories, in spite of the unknown and retaliation.” #harveyweinstein #metoo @timesupnow
As the world knows, Harvey has been perhaps the most egregious case of sexual assault in the Hollywood scene since the #MeToo movement began last year. In fact, the allegations against him inspired the social change.
However, just a few years prior, in 2014, Bill Cosby was accused of drugging and raping women throughout his long career. The court and jury convicted the Cosby Show alum as guilty on the 26th of April.
Perhaps the most famous of the accusers, and certainly the most vocal are Asia Argento and Rose McGowan. Other Hollywood actresses to accuse Harvey of crimes include Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie, and many, many others.
During an interview on Good Morning America, Rose said she has a “visceral need” to see him with handcuffs on.
