Margaret Atwood isn’t done with Gilead just yet. The Handmaid’s Tale author just announced plans to pen a sequel to her original novel – and it should hit shelves as early as 2019.

Atwood’s upcoming book is titled The Testaments and picks up 15 years after the events in The Handmaid’s Tale . Atwood released an official statement, revealing three different female characters will narrate her new story.

“Dear Readers: Everything you’ve ever asked me about Gilead and its inner workings is the inspiration for this book,” she explained. “Well, almost everything! The other inspiration is the world we’ve been living in.”

The publisher of Atwood’s new project, Nan A. Talese (Doubleday), has also confirmed the sequel.

Atwood wrote the original novel back in 1985, and it increased in popularity following the TV adaptation. According to Entertainment Weekly , Season 3 of the hit series just concluded, and Hulu is already making plans for a third season.

The Handmaid’s Tale centers on a handmaid named Offred and her attempts to survive under a totalitarian regime. The story takes place in a future where a theocratic government has taken over the United States and enslaved fertile women.

Although the news is exciting for fans of the show, Atwood’s publisher revealed that it is not connected to the series in any way.

The book is scheduled to be released on Sept. 10, 2019.

While we wait for the highly anticipated release, the cast and crew of The Handmaid’s Tale are hard at work filming Season 3.

Filming is currently taking place on the streets of Cambridge, in Ontario, Canada. In fact, a few streets in Galt’s Queen’s Square were closed to the public as fans watched a procession of red coats march downtown.

Residents of the city can expect a large influx of visitors over the next few weeks as the show introduces some 400 extras for key scenes next season.

Hulu has not announced when the new season of The Handmaid’s Tale will premiere, but it is expected to return sometime in 2019.
