Season 15 of Grey’s Anatomy premieres this week, and star Ellen Pompeo (Meredith Grey) hinted in a recent interview that the show could be ending after Season 16. The actress revealed that she isn’t ready to make a formal announcement, but she feels that they have told the majority of stories they can tell.
Pompeo is one of four actors who has been on the show since it premiered in 2004 — along with Justin Chambers (Alex Karev), Chandra Wilson (Miranda Bailey), and James Pickens Jr. (Richard Webber) — and her contract is up at the end of Season 16. And she says that it’s about time to mix things up, and she is looking for a change.
The 48-year-old actress is the mother of three kids, and it doesn’t come as a surprise to fans that she is looking to the future. But, it isn’t a decision that she will make on her own.
“We’re getting there. Shonda [Rhimes] and I will make that decision together,” Pompeo said. “I think that one of the biggest lessons that this show has taught me and being on this show for so long has taught me, is that relationships do change. And they do grow. They take work.”
She added that like any marriage or friendship, you have to put in the work while accepting other people’s flaws. Plus, you have to accept your own flaws and attempt to make changes and be a better person. However, it is worth the time and effort, and things do get better.
Pompeo went on to say that the end is nearing, and she wants to be more involved in her kids’ lives as they get older. She also revealed that she is currently into producing because it is like problem-solving 101, with one problem coming after another. She also called producing an “experiment in problem-solving,” while acting is a “young girl’s game.”
She explained that when you are an actress, you have to travel and be away a lot. Plus, you’ve got to go to places at night and work in the rain. However, Pompeo isn’t saying that she will never act again after Grey’s Anatomy ends because she wouldn’t want to pass up an amazing opportunity.
But ending Grey’s Anatomy won’t be easy. According to People Magazine, after Sarah Drew (April Kepner) left the show last season, she said it was like attending her own funeral. However, after being on the show for nearly a decade, she says it is exciting to spread her wings and be somebody else.
Season 15 of Grey’s Anatomy premieres on Thursday, September 27th on ABC.
