Gotham premiered its final season on Fox this week and is definitely living up to its subtitle, “Legend of the Dark Knight.” Season 5 will wrap up the Batman prequel and will presumably end with the arrival of the Caped Crusader himself.
But before we get to see Batman in action, the story will begin with the characters living in No Man’s Land. This is a reference to the comics in which Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) outlined a safe zone to prevent the villains from splitting up Gotham.

“Gordon is literally and figuratively on an island, on an island inside an island, surrounded by hostile forces,” McKenzie shared.
While McKenzie believes starting off in No Man’s Land was a wise decision, he admitted that things will get bad for Gordon and his team pretty quickly.
According to IGN, an earthquake isolates Gotham City from its neighbors, but on the show, Jeremiah (The Joker) orchestrates a series of explosions that separate the city.
Once Gotham is isolated, members of the criminal underworld divide the city into districts. Penguin, Ivy, Scarecrow, Freeze, Sirens, Zsasz and Firefly each control a section of town. That all changes, of course, after Bane (Shane West) arrives on the scene and threatens to shift the delicate balance of power.
Gordon is on the other end of things and wants to reconnect Gotham with the rest of the country. To make that happen, he will have to deal with Penguin and Bane, who are easily his biggest obstacles.
As the war for Gotham rages, fans can expect a few of their favorite characters to bite the dust. Exactly which ones will die, of course, is yet to be seen.
Once the main storyline in Season 5 ends, the series will jump forward in time 10 years. At this point, it is presumed that Bruce (David Mazouz) has become the Caped Crusader, though it still is not clear how the series will handle that transition.
New episodes of Gotham air Thursday nights on Fox.
