Following the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas in Parkland, Florida, five students who survived the horrific ordeal announced on Sunday they would march on Washington D.C, for strict gun control laws. March For Our Lives will take place on the 24th of March and was organized by Jacqueline Coren, Cameron Kasky, Alex Wind, David Hogg, and Emma Gonzalez.
To support the movement, George Clooney and his wife, Amal, said they would donate a large sum of money to the cause. In a statement to E! News on Tuesday, George, and Amal said they are “inspired by the courage” by the kids who are fighting for what they believe in.
The actor stated he and his family would be present for the march and will stand “side by side,” along with the protestors for stricter gun control laws.
George claimed, “we’re donating $500,000 to help pay for this groundbreaking event; our children’s lives” depend on the movement.
Additionally, other celebrities including Lady Gaga have unveiled their support through Twitter. The singer said “school safety,” is not a political issue, it is a human rights issue.
The purpose of March For Our Lives is to bring about effective gun control through government legislative. Partisan politics is below the meaning of the march, which intends to make the world safer for students and the public alike.
As you may know, seventeen students were killed last week following the shooting from a 19-year-old student who walked into the school with an AR-15-style .223 caliber rifle and opened fire on the faculty and student body.
However, on the other hand, conservatives and pro-gun advocates state the type of weapon he used was a hunting rifle and not an automatic weapon. The boy also didn’t have a criminal record which would stop him from obtaining it.
