The Iron Throne will be up for grabs when Game of Thrones returns to HBO in 2019. Jon Snow (Kit Harington) is the clear frontrunner to come out on top, but a new fan theory argues that Jon’s fate may have been revealed as early as Season 3.
The theory highlights a conversation between Maester Lupin (Donald Sumpter) and Catelyn Stark (Michelle Fairly) about the time Jon got the pox.
In the Season 3 scene, Catelyn recalled how Maester Luwin told her that if Jon survived the night, he would be fine, but “it would be a very long night.”

The Long Night is also a reference to when the White Walkers invaded Westeros in the Age of Heroes. If the two are related, the scene could have been foreshadowing Jon’s ultimate fate.
According to Express, the theory contends that Jon will survive the war with the White Walkers, but it will not be an easy fight. Even if Jon kills the Night King and makes it out alive, he still has to deal with Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) in King’s Landing.
He also has to worry about Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) surviving the war, which could complicate things even further. Jon pledged his allegiance to Daenerys last season – and fell in love with her – despite them not knowing about his true lineage. (They are related!)
Of course, it is anyone’s guess who will end up sitting on the Iron Throne at the end of the series. Apart from Jon and Daenerys, there are plenty of characters who could end up ruling Westeros. Jon may be the best bet to come out alive, but he is certainly going against some stiff competition.
HBO just announced the final season of Game of Thrones will premiere in April 2019 and will consist of 6 extended episodes. Here’s to hoping the new theory is right and Jon ends up taking the throne once Game of Thrones calls it a wrap.
