Friends Creator Says That Rachel And Joey Relationship Was ‘Doomed’ From The Start — Bad Match-Up Done On Purpose!
Friends fans may have different opinions on favorite characters, storylines, and fashion choices but most of the viewers are all in agreement that Rachel Green and Joey Tribbiani were a bad match-up from the get-go. It turns out that this was not a wacky storyline writers threw in after running out of ideas — it was done on purpose!
Everyone knows that although Ross Geller may have been a problematic character, he was Rachel’s one true love. The two ended up together but not before she explored her friendship with Joey and turned it into a full-blown relationship.
This has been voted the worst plot-twist in sitcom history.
Friends creator David Crane recently opened up about the subject to Radio Times.
He explained that Ross and Rachel were always going to end up with each other and Rachel and Joey were never going to be a long-term thing.
‘The Joey/Rachel thing I know is controversial. I love it. I love it because it’s wrong – and we knew going in: this is wrong. And that happens in life. There is the relationship that shouldn’t be. Even though you love someone, that’s not who you’re going to be with.’
He added that the plot took Joey into an emotional place and Matt Leblanc who portrayed Joey on the series got to show a different side of his acting.
Crane went on to explain: ‘Joey and Rachel, we always knew [it would end]. She was pregnant with Ross’s baby. We always know this was like… that this was doomed, but in a hopefully really interesting, moving and compelling way.’
If that doesn’t surprise you, here’s something that may: Phoebe Buffay was going to end up with David in an alternate ending!
David claimed that they didn’t know who the eclectic character would end up with but ended up choosing to have Phoebe stay with her husband.
