Sarah Drew had a completely different idea on what should have happened between April and Jackson (Jesse Williams) at the end of Season 14. The former Grey’s Anatomy star recently opened up about her character’s exit on the medical drama and admitted that she always hoped April and Jackson would find their way back to each other. Instead, showrunner Krista Vernoff reconnected April with her former lover, Matthew (Justin Bruening), in a move that destroyed Drew.
“I was devastated that Jackson and April [were not the] endgame,” Drew shared, adding that she always thought the two would get remarried because their relationship was supposed to be a “long, slow burn.”
That, of course, never happened. Instead, April and Matthew reunited during her final moments on the show, leaving Jackson to find love elsewhere. While Drew was devastated at first, she eventually understood why Vernoff made the decision.
At the end of the day, Matthew and April’s love story had more appeal and a greater romantic feel than April and Jackson’s. It also had a redemptive quality as April made amends for ditching Matthew on their wedding day.
According to TV Line, Drew also opened up about why Vernoff decided to end her character’s storyline in Season 14. Vernoff told Drew that the show had accumulated too many storylines over the years and was not doing a good enough job handling all of the characters. Vernoff thought April’s journey should come to an end because she had been through a lot and still landed on her feet.
When Vernoff broke the news to Drew about April’s exit, she promised the actress that her character would get a satisfying ending — and it sounds like she delivered on her promise.
Although Drew’s time on the show is officially over, she recently received recognition for directing a shortform spin-off about the interns at Grey Sloan Memorial. The actress was nominated for an Emmy for her work on the web series, which also provided her with a direction on where to take her career next.
In fact, now that her days on Grey’s Anatomy are behind her, Drew is looking forward to directing new projects and wants to start producing as well.
She is also open to returning to Grey’s Anatomy to direct an episode, as long as Vernoff will have her.
Season 15 of Grey’s Anatomy kicks off on Sept. 27 on ABC.
