Former Counting On stars Jill Duggar and Derick Dillard have left the country for another mission trip, but their destination and the fact that they are bringing their 8-month-old son, Samuel, is causing a stir. Is the couple putting their baby in serious danger?
The couple’s latest venture is a trip to the highly-violent city of Guadalajara, Mexico with a group from Cross Church in Rogers, Arkansas, to spread awareness of a new church in Guadalajara that has a “great gospel need.”
“The week will be filled with street evangelism and building relationships to share the gospel as we help Vida Church continue reaching Guadalajara,” a description of the trip read.
Over the weekend, Cross Church shared a picture of the missionary group taken at the Arkansas Regional Airport before they boarded their flight, and it featured Duggar and Dillard with Samuel. Their oldest son Israel, 2, is not in the photo.
Their decision to bring their youngest son is resulting in some serious complaints from fans since Guadalajara is full of rival criminal gangs that caused 23 deaths in just three days last month.
State Prosecutor Raul Sanchez Jimenez says that the violence is the result of the rearrangement of two organized crime groups who are fighting over territory.
The former reality TV couple plan on staying in the city for a week, while some members of the group will stay behind a little longer.
Duggar and Dillard lived in Central America for nearly two years before returning home to Arkansas last year, and they revealed that while they lived in El Salvador a Christian friend of theirs had been kidnapped and murdered.
At the time, the couple came under fire for having their oldest son with them on the trip, plus Jill was also pregnant at the time and could have exposed her unborn child to the Zika virus.
Duggar and Dillard are not licensed missionaries, but continue to travel abroad with the goal of spreading their faith. And, even though they have been back in the United States for almost a year, it doesn’t appear that the couple has attempted to take any licensing classes.
Fans have praised the couple for their philanthropic efforts, but when it comes to their parenting skills, they received more criticism than praise.
Most are classifying this latest travel decision with their baby as an epic parenting fail.
New episodes of Counting On – without Jill Duggar and Derick Dillard – air Monday nights on TLC.
