After USA Today published a scathing story about former Fixer Upper stars Chip and Joanna Gaines – accusing them of not spending as much time with their kids as they claim –, the father of four (soon to be five) fired back on Twitter to let the newspaper writer know that he crossed the line.
“I don’t know [Daryl Austin], [and] he clearly doesn’t know me. But for the record: If there is ever a need [with] my family [first], I’ll shut this circus down so fast it will make your head spin,” he tweeted. “BUT [Joanna] & I believe [with] God anything is possible, including having an amazing family AND [a] career you love.”
Obviously, the story did not go over well with the reality star, and a source told Life & Style that it “hit a nerve.” The insider then said that Chip was hurt, but more than anything he was p***d off because rule number one in Chip’s world is “don’t mess with his family.” But, that is exactly what the USA Today writer did.
In the editorial, writer Daryl Austin claimed that Chip and Joanna did not get where they are in life by putting their family first, and they don’t spend much time with their four kids – Duke, Drake, Ella, and Emmie. Joanna is also currently pregnant with baby number five.
As stars of a reality show, the family isn’t new to criticism, but Chip saw this attack on his parenting as going too far. The insider says that people can criticize Chip as a builder because that is fair game, but his family is off limits. The source also claims that he spent hours ranting to his wife about it.
Just a few months ago the couple announced that they had decided to end their popular HGTV home renovation show Fixer Upper, and explained that they needed to catch their breath for a moment. They also wanted to give love and attention to their family and their businesses.
An insider says that Chip and Joanna weren’t lying, and they still read to their kids at night and are sure to spend quality time with each one of their children. The source also makes it clear that the Gaines’ are amazing parents who “would move heaven and earth for their kids.” The couple always puts their kids before everything else, and that includes fame and work.
The couple doesn’t have anything to hide, so if you go after them, you better be prepared for them to attack you back.
In addition to spending time with his family and working on his businesses, Chip has been busy training for his first marathon, and this past weekend the 43-year-old finished the Silo District Marathon in Waco, Texas.
He also hosted the event, which was a benefit for the Brave Like Gabe Foundation that funds rare cancer research.
Joanna posted pictures on Instagram of her husband crossing the finish line while wearing a tool belt and captioned the photo by writing, “He finished!”
Fixer Upper just wrapped its fifth and final season.
Chip and Joanna Gaines are currently promoting their cookbook The Magnolia Table.
