Since May 2014, there have been lots of interesting thing that happened with the Jay-Z – Beyonce couple: they had a joint tour, launched a new Tidal streaming service, Beyonce’s appearance at Super Bowl Halftime, The Lemonade song and the concert tour and many, many other rumors and talks about Jay’z fidelity. However, for all these reasons, it seems strange that the producers from The Family Guy, the successful show, decided to parody precisely a moment that took place almost two and a half years ago. More exactly, they inspired themselves from a piece of silent footage which showed Solange Knowles attacking Jay Z in an elevator in Manhattan.
On the Sunday episode (on October 2), the main character of the show, Peter, tells his wife Lois that she’s seen what happens when people hold in their anger for too long, and adds that he was in that elevator together with Jay Z. Then the show presents Peter sitting in the elevator together with Jay Z and Solange while she starts to attack Jay.
Though everybody knows that Seth MacFarlane and his show Family Guy have never been keeping up with the news, it just doesn’t make sense to accuse him of bad jokes. However, most people agree that this late reference is not good humor material and that it lacks in good taste, as well as in good timing.
Moreover, it seems that this parody is completely inappropriate, since last Friday, on September 30, Solange Knowles has released a gorgeous album, titled A Seat at the Table. The album is an excellent material, since it’s very topical and personal at the same time and discussing key issues such as history, identity and race. This couldn’t have been launched better at any other point than the cultural talks we have been having in 2016, which renders Family Guy’s parody even more inappropriate.
