The Nellie Bly story is one of the most important, especially for female journalism. Not only did Nellie Bly put her life on the line for her work, but she proved that women could offer the world much more than staying home, being subservient wives and having children.
Nellie Bly began her writing career at the Pittsburgh Dispatch then moved to the New York World. She volunteered to go undercover in the asylum and spent her time taking there observing and preparing to tell her story.
When representatives for the New York World went to claim her she had already witnessed enough abuse to change the mental health industry for future generations.
Though Nellie Bly wasn’t able to institute enough reforms to prevent things like lobotomies and electric shock therapy, her groundbreaking story paved the way for more immediate oversight of asylums and caused public and social awareness regarding issues pertaining to the less fortunate who needed mental health treatment.
Lifetime’s movie is going to be a psychological thriller and there is no question that Christina Ricci will give the performance her all.
Escaping The Madhouse: The Nellie Bly Story premieres on Lifetime on January 19, 2019, at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Are you going to watch the movie?
