Donald Trump fooled Mexican President Enrique Peña once, but it looks like it will not happen a second time. Mr. Peña released a video on Twitter Wednesday night, where he said that his administration is not paying for Trump’s big fat billion dollar wall. Unlike former Mexican President Vicente Fox, who used an expletive to show his resistance against the wall, Peña Nieto struck a more diplomatic tone. The Latin American leader said he does not support the idea of building walls between the neighboring countries.
He went on to say that while they disagree on the wall, he looks forward to working with the brash New Yorker on other issues that concern Mexicans and Americans.
In the short video, Peña said: “Mexico does not believe in walls. I’ve said time again; Mexico will not pay for any wall.” He added: “Mexico offers its friendship to the people of the United States and expresses its wish to arrive at agreements with its government, deals that will be in favor of Mexico and the Mexicans.”
Peña’s video was in response to the executive orders signed by Trump to start the construction of a pricey wall along the 1,989 mile Mexico–United States border. After signing the documents, Trump said in an interview that he will find ways to make Mexico contribute to the construction of the wall.
He said on ABC that hard working American taxpayers would pay for the wall and the Mexican government will reimburse the cost. He said: “All it is, is we’ll be reimbursed at a later date from whatever transaction we make from Mexico. I’m just telling you there will be a payment. It will be in a form, perhaps a complicated form. What I’m doing is good for the United States. It’s also going to be good for Mexico. We want to have a very stable, very solid Mexico.”
So, when will the construction begin? Trump shared: “As soon as we can, as soon as we can physically do it, I would say in months, yeah. I would say in months — certainly.”
During the campaign, Trump flew to Mexico and played Peña like a fiddle. In a press conference where Trump stated that they had talked about the wall and the Mexican president stood motionless, unable to call out the lie.
