Emmy Rossum announced she is leaving the award-winning series Shameless that has been her home at Showtime for the past eight years. The show premiered in January 2011 and quickly made Emmy Rossum a household name. Portraying the family matriarch Fiona Gallagher, Rossum brought the character to life as she became a surrogate mother to her siblings and juggled family responsibilities due to her father’s alcoholism. Rossum will appear in season 9 that returns to Showtime on September 9, 2018, and confirmed via her official Facebook page it would be her last.
In a near cryptic Instagram message, Emmy Rossum posted a photo showing the cast of Shameless and wrote the words, “It’s a hard thing to put into words, feelings. But I’m going to try. Link [sic] in bio.”
The Instagram post left many curious and a return to the link in her bio brought people to her Facebook where she wrote in lengthy detail her decision to leave Shameless.
Rossum’s statement quickly went viral and without delay, fans took to social media to express their sadness at hearing the news. Additionally, many fans offered the dismal prediction that Shameless won’t survive her departure.
In addition to fans, heads for Shameless and Showtime Networks also made public statements regarding the news.
Shameless executive producer John Wells quickly announced that Rossum will always be welcome to return. Showtime Networks President of Programming Gary Levine also released a public statement expressing sorrow at Rossum’s news. You may see a portion of that statement along with a link to the full post at Facebook below.

Fiona Gallagher will always be one of Showtime’s iconic characters, and we applaud Emmy for bringing this character to life in such a natural, touching and fearless performance. On behalf of everyone at Showtime and her millions of fans, we thank you Emmy!”
