After over ten years of watching 19 Kids & Counting and Counting On, fans can’t help but wonder what it would be like to have an unedited, behind-the-scenes look at the life of the Duggar family. Rumors are constantly swirling around the fundamental, uber-conservative family, and many can’t help but question just what is real in the family and what is the result of TV editing. Could the truth be a little surprising for fans?
According to In Touch Weekly, most people who work on the production crews of reality shows sign ironclad non-disclosure agreements, so they don’t reveal a show’s secrets to the media. But, a few people who have worked on Duggar productions have anonymously come forward throughout the years to share their stories about the religious family, and some of their claims are quite shocking.
One person who worked on their show back in 2008 says that the Duggars were so isolated from the world at that time, producers told the crew to keep their interactions with them to a minimum, so they wouldn’t upset the family.
“Even a lighthearted conversation that might actually educate them about something they were horribly ignorant about was seen as tainting their view. It was very much like being told to not tell your little sister about Santa Claus,” revealed the insider.
The family’s homophobia is also a big deal, and once before a trip to New York, mom Michelle discovered that a member of the crew was gay, and she had him removed from the set. As a result, when new crew members come in, they tend to be more straight-edged and Christian than you would typically see on the set of a TV show.
Another insider says that Jim Bob once punished one of his sons when he caught him masturbating by forcing him to do chores for an entire day with his hands tied together.
Other secrets of the family include the fact that Anna Duggar was planning to divorce Josh after his molestation and cheating scandals, but at some point, her plans changed, and she decided to stay and help navigate him back to the Lord.
Sources close to the family say that Josh has always been kind of creepy and “a douche,” and when you are around him, you get an unsettling feeling that is hard to explain.
Other insiders reveal that Jim Bob’s life mission is to have 100 grandchildren, and Michelle’s whole sweet, soft-spoken persona is completely phony.
When it comes down to it, former members of the crew think that the Duggars are “just as nuts” as most people do, and there was a clear separation between the crew and the family. The crew is just normal people doing a job, and the Duggars are the talent they are shooting.
Watch the Duggar family on new episodes of Counting On, Monday nights on TLC.
