According to a report from The New Yorker, Donald Glover claims Chevy Chase made racially-charged comments toward him on the set of Community. The 34-year-old explained that he saw Chevy as “fighting time,” and insinuated the star’s time in the limelight was finished a long time ago.
He said a “true artist” has to understand when it’s time to pack it in. Additionally, Glover stated he couldn’t help if Chase were “thrashing in the water.”
Dan Harmon, the creator of the popular series, Community, said Chase often made racial jokes or tried to interrupt Glover’s scenes in a passive-aggressive attempt to make him look bad.
Allegedly, Chase once said to him that he was only funnier because he was black. The 45-year-old, Harmon, said Chase was the first person to recognize Glover’s undeniable talent and “gift,” as he described it.

However, Chevy’s alleged jealousy became a wrench in the machine. Following one night of a rant from the old actor, Harmon apologized on Chevy’s behalf.
In a statement to the publication, Chase said he was “saddened” to hear that Glover perceived him that way. As you may know, Glover left the series after the fourth season and returned intermittently throughout season 5.
When speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in August of 2017, Harmon said he wanted to convince himself that Donald’s departure wasn’t the death of his show but it turned out to be the case.
Harmon conceded that now that it’s all over, he thinks everyone can agree his suspicion of the time was correct. When talking to the crowd during the Comic-Con panel, Glover stated it’s important for things to end even if they’re fantastic.
