“A few comments are tricking [sic] in and of course I had to google to see what was goin on!” wrote the singer on her Instagram Story. “Congrats are certainly in order but for #dawsonscreek #fosseverdon #brokebackmountain #greatestshowman #manchesterbythesea ‘Michelle’ Ok bye.”
The singer and actress are often confused for one another, most recently when the actress won an Emmy for her performance in the FX drama Fosse/Verdon. The four-time Oscar nominee gave a passionate speech about equal pay for women when she accepted the award, but people were getting the two mixed up on social media and sending the singer messages of support, as well as criticism.
The singer called people out with a message on Instagram Live, asking people why they are tagging her and congratulating her, and wondering if they realize that she’s black.
“How come when y’all are tagging and congratulating a person, do y’all see that I’m black? When you go to my profile, you search for the ‘Michelle Williams,’ I am black. OK? I ain’t mixed with nothing, I ain’t mixed with Persian, Russian, I am black,” she said.
The singer added that she was trying to figure out why she was getting cursed out for the actress’ speech, which the singer thought was “awesome.” The singer also praised the actress for her performance in Fosse/Verdon, saying she played the role of “Gwen Verdon to a T.”
