Directed by Hannah Lux Davis, the documentary covers seven months of the former Disney star’s life, and fans get an up-close look at what really happened on her road to recovery.
Demi Lovato reveals that she first tried cocaine at 17, while she was still working on Sonny with a Chance; and, despite warnings from family and friends, she decided to do it anyway. She says that she was in love with the drug from the first time she used it.
In the movie’s highlights, in addition to the cocaine revelation, it is revealed that Jonas Brothers tried to intervene and rehab did not work the first time around.
Her first attempt at getting help was back in 2010 when she was 18, but Lovato says she didn’t work her program because she wasn’t ready to be sober.
The Stone Cold singer said she went to the extreme of faking drug tests with other people’s urine and admitted to lying to her fans when she first started promoting sobriety because she was still clearly using.
“We were in New York, and she clearly was on something, and she was on air promoting this new way of life, and I was like, ‘You’re so full of it,'” her manager Phil McIntyre says in the documentary.
Even after a stint in a psychiatric unit, Lovato still hadn’t reached her rock bottom. It wasn’t until an American Idol appearance that she decided to sober up.
The singer got so drunk the night before that she was puking in the car on the way to the show, and ended up performing while she was hungover. Her team gave her an ultimatum, she had to get clean, or they would leave.
Demi Lovato recently celebrated five years of sobriety.
