After being slammed for trivializing male sexual abuse and harassment by sharing a prank she had played on her bodyguard, Demi Lovato took to social media to defend herself as well as apologize. It all started on March 6 after she was asked to reveal what the funniest prank she’s ever pulled was.
In a now deleted tweet, she wrote: ‘I hired a lady of the night in Vegas and sent her to Max’s hotel room to surprise him. She walked into his room without any permission and grabbed him in his ‘area’, and he freaked the f*** out hahahahaha.’
As you can imagine, a lot of social media users were not Okay with this!
‘I do not think you understand how men are conditioned to normalize sexual assault. They’re always expected to just laugh it off and if they ever say anything they are told to get over it. If it was a woman, a hashtag would already be trending,’ one fellow tweeted.
‘Take responsibility for your actions. Sexual assault isn’t a joke, and it is not funny,’ another wrote.
On Sunday, Demi mocked the criticism she received at first.
‘I swear I could tweet something about craving jelly beans and it would offend someone,’ she tweeted.
She then defended herself saying: ‘For all of those coming at me right now, listen to the lyrics of Warrior and maybe you will have more compassion for someone who made a simple mistake. Of all people, I know about sexual abuse. You do not have to educate me.’
‘So sorry if anyone was offended,’ she apologized minutes later.
What do you think about the controversy?
