During her performance, tour mates Khelani and DJ Khaled surprised her with a sweet ‘happy six years of being sober!’ While on stage Friday night, Demi Lovato opened up about her ‘trails and tribulations’ and soon became emotional, tearing up in front of her supporting fans.
‘What you have overcome through trials and tribulations, through dark clouds. You found the sunshine, and now the sun is shining on you forever,’ DJ Khaled said, while Khelani added: ‘I am so, so, so, so proud of you, and honored to know you.’
After the two left the stage, fans started chanting Demi’s name, and that is when she addressed the crowd, visibly touched.
‘Kehlani and DJ Khaled thank you so much. That was so inspirational and so powerful and so meaningful,’ she began.
‘Yesterday, six years ago, I was drinking vodka out of a Sprite bottle at 9 A.M., throwing up in the car. I remember thinking, ‘This is no longer cute, this is no longer fun. And I am just like my dad.’ So I took a look at my life, and said, ‘Something has to change. Something has to change, I have got to get sober’ – so I did.’
She went on to explain why she has always been so transparent about her struggle with alcohol abuse.
As the people started cheering, she stated: ‘The reason why I became so open about my story, is that I know that there are people here tonight that need to ask for help, and I want you to know that it is ok. Mental health’s something we all need to talk about, and we need to take the stigma away from it.’

Fittingly enough, after her inspirational message, Demi went on to sing an even more touching version of Warrior, a song about painful memories from the artist’s past.
Lovato has written songs about her family before, even some about her late father Patrick, who she has claimed was abusive.
