David Copperfield is in hot water yet again. The famous magician is now being accused of drugging and raping a 17-year-old girl over 20 years ago. The accusations surfaced shortly after Copperfield commented on the #MeToo movement and his previous allegations of sexual misconduct.
According to Page Six, Brittney Lewis came forward and accused Copperfield of rape. Lewis is now 40 years old and recalled her encounter with the magician when she was a teenager. The two allegedly met in 1998 when he was judging a modeling competition in Atami, Japan.
Copperfield liked Lewis and invited her to see him perform in California. Lewis was only 17 at the time and Copperfield assured her grandmother that he would take very good care of her. The two trusted Copperfield and thought he was a charming man, but all that changed once Lewis flew to California.

Lewis claims that Copperfield put her up in a hotel that had adjoining rooms with him. After his show, Copperfield took Lewis out to a local bar for a few drinks, despite her age. She noticed Copperfield putting something in her drink but only later realized that it was a drug. The rest of the evening is a bit hazy for Lewis, but she does remember pieces of what happened that night.
“I remember my clothes being taken off,” she explained. “He was kissing my face and then I remember him starting to go down on my body with his face. And then, as soon as he started going down, I just completely blacked out.”
The next morning was equally excruciating for Lewis. She says that Copperfield assured her that they didn’t have sex, but only because she wasn’t 18 years old. She suspected that Copperfield raped her but that he probably used a condom to hide the evidence. He then made her sign a letter saying that nothing happened and that she was all right.
The letter was intended to keep Lewis quiet and it worked until 2007, when Lewis initially came forward with her story. Copperfield was facing multiple allegations at the time and Lewis’ story was never followed up, though she did tell the FBI about what happened.
The FBI refused to comment on the case.
Copperfield has not commented on Lewis’ story. Because the incident happened over twenty years ago, Lewis cannot file charges against him. Lewis admitted that she doesn’t care about the charges and is not seeking any settlement against Copperfield. She just wants the world to know what really happened and that Copperfield isn’t as innocent as he claims.
The FBI investigated Copperfield in 2007 for allegedly raping Lacey Carroll, also a former model. The case was eventually dropped, and Carroll was charged with making false accusations and prostitution.
David Copperfield maintains his innocence to this day and says that he fully supports the #MeToo movement and women coming forward with their stories.
