Dark, Gritty Reboot Of 'Sabrina The Teenage Witch' Coming To The CW!
One of the most beloved characters of 1990s television is returning to the small screen, but with a seriously dark twist. Sabrina the Teenage Witch is getting a new series at The CW, but instead of a cheesy sitcom environment, the show will be a gritty hourlong drama.
Melissa Joan Hart became a household name on Sabrina the Teenage Witch , which ran for four seasons on ABC before moving to The WB for seasons five through seven.
The character is actually a long-running comic book creation, first appearing in Archie Comics all the way back in 1962 before getting her own comic series in 1971.
The CW is already airing a grounded, mature version of Archie and his pals with the series Riverdale , which returns for a second season next month.
The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will be a spin-off of Riverdale , with the character likely being introduced this season before starring in her own series next fall.
The network says the show "reimagines the origin and adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult and, of course, witchcraft."
Riverdale was based on a recent attempt by Archie Comics to reboot the Archie series with a more realistic art style and more mature storylines.
Likewise, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will take inspiration from the dark comic book series of the same name that began in 2014.
Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa will write the pilot for the Sabrina spin-off, with Lee Toland Krieger slated to direct.
Both Aguirre-Sacasa and Krieger will be executive producers on the series, alongside Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Jon Goldwater.
The idea of introducing Sabrina to the Riverdale universe has been talked and hinted about since the show began, but until now it was considered possibly too fantastical to become a reality. In the meantime, Riverdale returns for Season 2 on a new night and time on Wednesday, October 11 at 8/7c on The CW.
