Courtney Love paid tribute to her late husband, Kurt Cobain, with a heart-wrenching tribute on social media this week. In remembrance of what would have been Cobain’s 51st birthday, Love shared a throwback pic of her and Cobain cuddling in each other’s arms.
According to People, Cobain took his own life in the spring of 1994. The Nirvana frontman was found dead in his home in Seattle after shooting himself with a 20-gauge shotgun. Cobain had long suffered from depression and drug addiction and was only 27 years old at the time of his suicide.
In a suicide note, Cobain pleaded for Love to continue living for the sake of their daughter, Frances, whom Cobain thought would be better off after his death.
Love also has a history of drug abuse, a trait she passed down to her daughter. Last week, Frances opened up about her struggles with drugs and revealed that she has been sober now for 2 years.
While Frances is thankful for being drug-free for a few years, her mother has also struggled with addiction. In 2005, Love was forced to check herself into rehab after she confessed to using while on probation. Love is doing a lot better these days and even talked about how Frances reminds her of Cobain in an interview in 2017.
Love admitted that Cobain and Frances share a likeness. She also revealed that her daughter has Cobain’s sick and dry sense of humor and has a unique ability with one-liners just like her father. Unfortunately, it sounds like Frances also inherited some of her father’s vices, though it sounds like she’s finally turning her life around for good.
Meanwhile, in honor of Cobain, fans were quick to remember one of Nirvana’s most popular moments in front of the cameras. Back in 1991, the band was asked to perform their hit single, “Smell Like Teen Spirit,” for BBC’s Top of The Pops show.
The only hitch was that BBC only wanted Cobain’s voice to be live. The rest of the band was asked to fake their parts in the song. In response to the restrictions, Nirvana’s bass player, Kris Novoselic, drummer, Dave Grohl, played out of time with the song while Cobain switched up the lyrics.
In the opening line, instead of singing “load up on guns, bring your friends,” Cobain sang “load up on drugs, kill your friends.” He also lowered his voice one octave and attempted to sing like Morrissey in what has become one of the bands most memorable moments.
Courtney Love stays out of the spotlight these days; she most recently spoke out about the Harvey Weinstein scandal.
