There is a rule in the Duggar family that you can’t have a social media account until you get married, but 21-year-old Josiah just got engaged to Lauren Swanson a couple of months ago, and he has been on Instagram since 2015. So how did the Counting On star get around his parents’ rules?
As In Touch Weekly reports, this is Josiah’s second relationship, which makes him the first Duggar kid in his generation to not marry the first person he courted. Back in 2015, Josiah started courting Marjorie Jackson, and it was around that time that he started his Instagram account. And, he used the platform to announce his relationship.
The assumption is that Josiah got his account so early because the family thought that when he started courting Jackson, he would eventually marry her. And, the theory makes sense because up until that time, that’s the way all of the other Duggar courtships had gone.
But, just a few months after announcing they were together, Josiah and Jackson split, and they didn’t let anyone know why. But his Instagram account didn’t disappear. Instead, he shared with fans his love of food and praised the ALERT Academy.
Can you find me in this photo? ?Going through ALERT Unit 51 in 2014 was one of the best experiences I've had. Looking back, the most important lessons I learned there were how to make the most of every moment, and to be ready for whatever opportunities God places in front of me next! Unit 58 is coming up soon! I'd encourage any young man 17+ who's up to the challenge to check it out! alertacademy.com ➡️Promo video link in bio
Now that he is engaged to Swanson, Josiah consistently posts about his relationship and how much he loves his future bride. However, he has yet to give any details about the upcoming wedding, including the date.
In one post, Josiah shared a pic of the two Face Timing, and they didn’t appear to have a chaperone as Duggar rules dictate. It seems that once a couple gets engaged, the family becomes a bit lax on the rules and allows the engaged couple to have some alone time.
Meanwhile, as Josiah’s wedding day approaches, his older brother and sister – 28-year-old twins Jana and John David – still have no access to social media because they are both still single and have never courted.
Jim Bob and Michelle do still monitor texts when their kids are courting, but they do allow more privacy on phone calls. However, the family is strict when it comes to use of their smartphones. Jim Bob once explained that they don’t have internet access on their phones.
“Young men would have more of a struggle seeing bad stuff, so what we’ve done with the smartphones is that we’ve … actually locked out Safari and any Internet search at all, and then we’ve just had basic apps,” he revealed in an interview.
Josiah Duggar will be back for the eighth season of Counting On next month on TLC.
