Fans of 19 Kids & Counting and the spinoff Counting On know that the Duggar family refer to child discipline as “training,” and those aren’t just the words of Jim Bob and Michelle. Now that their kids are becoming parents, they seem to be taking the same approach and are coming under the same fire as the Duggar patriarch and matriarch.
Jessa Duggar Seewald is the recent target of fans when it comes to her parenting skills, but the mom of two isn’t keeping quiet. Instead, she is firing back against the criticism and recently offered a heated clap-back.
“We train for occupations, we train for jobs, we hire personal trainers for fitness…and we train/teach our kiddos in right behavior in hopes that they will grow up to be caring, thoughtful, and responsible adults,” wrote Seewald.
It isn’t clear what “training” that fans had a problem with, but in the past, the family has drawn criticism for a plethora of parenting fails.
Speculation is that the conservative family subscribes to the methods explained in To Train Up A Child – Child Training in the 21s Century by Michael and Debi Pearl. The book is an evangelical Christian guide to parenting that encourages corporal punishment and “blanket training.”
The controversial technique includes placing a baby on a blanket, and if they attempt to roll over or crawl off the edge, parents are to hit the child with a flexible ruler or another instrument. The theory is that the child will eventually learn not to leave the blanket.
In addition to her parenting techniques, fans have also criticized Jessa over her cluttered house. The 25-year-old is raising some eyebrows when it comes to her boys’ general safety after a recent Instagram post showed the floors of her house covered in hard objects where her one-year-old son Henry was playing.
When he attempted to slide down his indoor plastic slide, his dad quickly removed the items before he landed, but fans took notice of the situation and posted a variety of critical comments.
The couple has also received backlash over their home’s location since it sits right next to a dangerous interstate known for its fatal crashes.
The family doesn’t have a fence around their property, and Jessa has posted pictures of the boys playing in the yard with only a treeline separating them from the highway.
When your proud parent moment is a fail. (Swipe left for more pics!) Haha! ? Spurgeon loves looking at books with horses in them, so I was super excited that today he would get to experience his first pony ride! "Spurgeon, look! It's a pony! What does he say? Neeeeeigh! Do you want to ride the pony? Yay! This'll be fun! Here, pet the pony, isn't he nice?" Spurgeon smiles ? "Hmmm…Idk what to think. Well sitting here isn't so bad! Wait a second…we're moving. Mom! I'm not so sure about this!!!" *proceeds to ride the minute-long western expedition in a majorly hunched-over position clinging to me* He did pretty good for not really liking it, but when I tried to get one last pic of him sitting on the pony by himself, he was so over it. ? "Get me off this creature!" Haha! Oh well, maybe he'll be interested and wanna try again next year. ?
Despite their controversial techniques, the boys still seem happy and healthy, and a source close to the family claims they are now expecting baby number three.
An insider recently posted on Reddit that she saw Jessa’s baby bump with her own eyes, and she thinks she is about three to four months pregnant.
Fans can catch up with Jessa Duggar and Ben Seewald and the rest of the family when the new season of Counting On premieres Monday, February 26th on TLC.
