Cole Sprouse has been on vacation in the city of Manila, Philippines and has posted many interesting photos to social media. After he was accused of exploiting impoverished Filipino children, the “Riverdale” star offered an apology.
Cole is not only an actor, he is a professional photographer. He has photographed many of his celebrity friends for multiple popular publications. He also fancies taking photos of the places that he travels to.
In a now-deleted upload, the 25-year-old took a picture of a few young children looking at him in what seems to e a poverty-stricken neighborhood. He uploaded the photo along with a caption that read: “Well i’m not your parent, don’t gotta follow me around.”
It may have seemed innocent enough to Cole and some of his followers, but to others, it seemed insensitive.
One fan wrote: “You shouldn’t post a photo of some innocent kid with her poor impoverished living conditions in the back and make a joke. A rich white privileged man going into a place he really doesn’t belong taking pictures and putting a caption like that..”
Another blasted him by stating: “It’s just a few little kids who probably have never seen people like you before. That’s so rude to just say that. you should really take ths down.”
Sprouse realized that his followers had a valid point. After taking down the picture, he wrote on his Instagram story: “For those of you that took offense to this photo or the caption, I removed it. My apologies, and not my intention. Certainly not seeking to sensationalize poverty nor poke fun, shoulda have thought more about the words used, and the implications of those words I hadn’t even considered.”
He will continue taking photos but be more mindful of the consequences of his actions.
