Charlize Theron was able to put on the pounds for her last Academy Award-winning role as the female serial killer in Monster. But despite her experience, Charlize struggled with the same goal this time around.
The 32-year-old actress had to gain 50 pounds to play an overworked mom in her latest film, Tully, and she explained that all of that poor-quality food really affected her emotional well-being or lack thereof.
When speaking with reporters from Entertainment Tonight, she explained it was important for her to get into that mindset by adopting similar behaviors.
“I got hit in the face pretty hard with depression,” Theron explained, and a lot of it was due to the processed foods and refined sugar.
According to Theron, she wasn’t a great person to work with when doing this movie. However, she admitted that at first, it was an excuse to eat whatever food she wanted.
Charlize would take a pit-stop at In-N-Out every once in a while and down two milkshakes at once, but after several weeks of the same behavior, it lost its appeal.
Additionally, she set alarms for herself so she would eat food in the middle of the night. Her weight took her family by surprise as well, with her two-year-old daughter, August, believing her mother was pregnant again.
Charlize Theron was in her late 20’s when she portrayed the prostitute-turned killer in Monster. That was a long time ago, and now she’s 43-years-old so it wasn’t nearly as easy to deal with the fluctuating weight changes to her body. However, her doctor said everything was “all good,” so she kept on trucking anyway.
