Due to the closing of salons and barbershops across the country amid the COVID-19 pandemic, many people have attempted to cut their own hair at home – with mixed results. Today Show co-host Carson Daly is one of those people who has seen his hair get pretty “wild” during self-isolation, so he attempted to cut it on live television with the help of celebrity hairstylist Chris Appleton.
“Carson himself has acknowledged his hair has gotten wild,” host Savannah Guthrie said on Wednesday morning’s episode of Today. “It’s like a wild tumbleweed!”

To help him out, the Today show contacted Appleton, who has worked with stars like Jennifer Lopez, Christina Aguilera, Kim Kardashian, and Ariana Grande. Unfortunately, Appleton’s video feed was down, so he couldn’t see Daly and Daly couldn’t see him. Instead, Appleton had to tell Daly the steps over the phone.
“I’ve had so many people messaging me saying, ‘Please help me cut my hair at home,’” Appleton said. “Carson are you ready?”
Daly replied that he was ready, and held up his razor while asking if he should use number two or number three. Appleton explained that when you cut your hair at home, you want to start by going a little bit longer than you want it to be before slowly going shorter to reach the desired length.
Appleton advised Daly to start with a number three, and added that the motion of the razor should be “bottom to top.” He also recommended that Daly do “a little flick motion” when he reaches the top of the hair.
Appleton said to start at the sides near the sideburns and move up to the temple instead of following the shape of the head. Daly then recruited his 11-year-old son to help him with the back, which he said was “pretty good” after seeing the cut in the mirror.
The celebrity hairdresser told Daly not to “go overboard” with the cut, but that advice didn’t stick with The Voice host. Instead, he ended up shaving his head completely, and Daly posted a pic of his bald head on Instagram.
“Here’s the final product! I think we did pretty good! 😂,” wrote Carson Daly in the caption. “Thanks to @chrisappleton1 for walking my son & I thru the self haircutting process this am live on @todayshow 😳.”
