Caitlyn Jenner voted for Donald Trump in the 2016 elections, but it turns out that she regrets that decision now. Apparently, the transgender icon was convinced the president would actually support the LGBTQ community, which, obviously, was not the case.
Due to the fact that the Jenner has always been a Republican, voting for Trump was not a surprise but after transitioning, she’s become much more aware that the party is definitely not a supporter of LGBTQ rights.
Still, at the time, Caitlyn believed Trump’s promises that he would help the community if elected.
Looking back, Caitlyn admits she was completely wrong about the Commander in Chief.
In her op-ed for the Washington Post, Caitlyn Jenner opened up about it saying: ‘Following Trump’s election as president, I saw some fertile ground for change in the Republican Party on LGBTQ issues. Trump was the very first Republican candidate to claim to support this vulnerable community.’
‘Poll after poll showed Americans’ views on LGBTQ issues were changing — and that this ground well extended even to the voter base of the Republican Party. I was optimistic this was how I could leverage my privilege for change.’
She admitted that ‘Sadly, I was wrong. The reality’s that the trans community’s being relentlessly attacked by the president. The leader of our nation’s shown no regard for an already marginalized community. He’s ignored our humanity. He’s insulted our dignity.’
Jenner went on to slam Trump some more by writing that ‘He has made trans people into his political pawns as he whips up animus against us in an attempt to energize the most right wing segment of his party, claiming his anti transgender policies are meant to ‘protect the country.’ This is politics at its very worst. It’s unacceptable, it’s upsetting, and it has deeply, personally hurt me.’
Finally, Caitlyn made it very clear that she has changed her mind completely as far as supporting Donald Trump is concerned.
‘I can’t support anyone who’s working against our community. I don’t support Trump. I must learn from my mistakes and move forward.’
