In the most recent episode of Below Deck Med, it appeared that Conrad Empson’s relationship with Hannah Ferrier was over before it really began. After Empson asked Ferrier to reimburse him 50 euros for a carton of cigarettes, the couple got into their first big fight that led to a heated discussion about the future of their relationship and what matters most in a partner. The conversation ended with the bosun and the chief stew calling it quits.
During an interview with The Daily Dish, Empson said that when he looks back on that moment, it seems like Ferrier had different priorities than he did. He says he would never choose money over happiness and considering how she reacted to the 50 euros conversation, Empson felt that Ferrier felt differently.
Empson also explained the origin of the 50 euros reimbursement by revealing that one day he was running low on cigarettes and he was going out to get more. Instead of using his tip money, he preferred to use the cash in his wallet.
“I asked Hannah, ‘Do you want me to buy a carton of cigarettes for you?’ I was going to get some, and I could buy some for you, and you’ll give the money back to me later. ‘Yeah, yeah, sure, that’s not [a] problem at all.’ I went and got it,” he said.
Then a couple of days later, he and Ferrier were going out, like viewers saw, and when he got into his wallet and realized there was no money, it reminded him to bring up the 50 euros she owed him. Empson says it was a non-aggressive, simple conversation, but then she took the money out of her purse and threw it on the floor. At the time, the way Ferrier threw the money didn’t click for Empson, but when he thought about it later, he realized how degrading it was, and eventually things blew up.
In the car ride on their way to the crew’s night out, Empson noticed Ferrier’s body language, and then she brought up the M3 gift she gave her ex-boyfriend. This made him realize the bigger issue in the situation. He says that he believes when you owe someone money, then you owe them money. And it doesn’t matter if you are in a relationship because everything is equal and should be split. But Ferrier had a different opinion.
Empson says that it was their arrangement from the beginning that she would pay him back, and if you say you are going to do something, then you should do it.
But the thing that surprised Empson the most about that evening with Ferrier was the fact that she admitted that she is sometimes with guys for their money. The fact that she said that out loud shocked him.
